The Secretary-General of the Muslim World League delivered a keynote address at the opening of the international conference of the Euromed University of Fez.

Fez:
Hosted by the Euromed University of Fez, in the Kingdom of Morocco, and with the participation of global figures—including the United Nations High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations—alongside a number of academics and thinkers from 75 countries, as well as the university’s partners, and with attendance exceeding 2,000 people, His Excellency Sheikh Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, the Secretary-General of the Muslim World League and Chairman of the Organization of Muslim Scholars, took part as a keynote speaker at the opening ceremony of the conference titled: “The Future of Human Civilization Facing the Challenges of AI.”

He noted in his speech the importance of the conference topic, which addresses a significant issue related to our civilizational world and its intellectual transformation that has evolved over recent centuries—beginning with the knowledge revolution of the 16th and 17th centuries, which shifted humanity from traditional material thinking toward an expanded experimental scientific method, whose principles were established by Muslim scholars between the 10th and 11th centuries—leading up to the artificial intelligence revolution, which has transformed the machine from a digital memory limited to storing knowledge into a system capable of analyzing and generating ideas.

He emphasized the need for the artificial intelligence revolution to be guided by a unified ethical framework based on our shared human values. He presented a comprehensive vision in this regard, stressing the importance of defining agreed-upon principles before developing AI systems—especially concerning information related to religions, races, or cultures—to prevent such technologies from becoming negative tools that promote hatred, racism, or support theories of civilizational conflict. He also called for holding relevant companies accountable through transparency, and for establishing strict boundaries in sensitive and high-risk areas, as well as in major, consequential decisions, where the final judgment must remain in human hands.

His Eminence stressed the need to distinguish between humans and machines. Humans are free in their thinking, and this freedom leads them to what is right when their reasoning is sound. Machines, however—foremost among them artificial intelligence—are not free; they are bound to the will of those who feed them, whether with facts or misleading information. As such, they possess neither awareness nor independent will. He affirmed that our civilizational future with artificial intelligence depends on us, not on the technology itself, since it ultimately represents us within its vast domain according to the instructions and authority we grant it.
